Speakers: Steel Casting Research in CanmetMATERIALS, Dr. Selcuk Kuyucak, Research Scientist, CanmetMATERIALS
This presentation will cover Canmet research on porosity and embrittlement in steel castings. Gas-related porosity forms a few mm below the surface, whereas shrinkage porosity tends to form in the interior of a casting. The major sources of gas uptake are from returns and the melting operation. Also, air aspiration and/or entrainment may take place during pouring. Steels are often fast-cooled from a high temperature to avoid the formation of embrittling equilibrium phases. Intergranular carbides or nitrides are examples. Intergranular carbides in austenitic manganese steels form at a online pokies maximum rate of 600 degrees C, and the harmful thick carbides start forming after about a minute at this temperature. A method of measuring quenching efficiency will be outlined as a process control tool to ensure satisfactory castings are obtained.
Dr. Selcuk Kuyucak is a research scientist with Canmet since 1990. His work related to porosity in steel castings, feeding distances, stainless steels, austenitic manganese steel and high alloy white irons. He obtained his PhD from McGill University, Montreal.
Speakers: Applications of Improvement Techniques in Foundry and Alloy Development, Dr. Delin Li, Research Scientist, CanmetMATERIALS
In this presentation, structured problem solving and improvement techniques are introduced such as step-type methods, concentration map, and DOE (design of experiments). Industrial examples include foundry process improvement, cast iron and stainless steel development. Current steel casting projects are briefly reported.
Dr. Delin Li joined Canmet as a Research Scientist in 2012. Dr. Li obtained his PhD from Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xian in China and has extensive research and industrial experience. He had spent some of his time as research fellow in Northwestern Polytechnical University in China, Germany”s Aerospace Research Center and Marshall Space Flight Center NASA in USA. He also worked in Xian Aircraft and Wescast Industries.
