Our March 21st meeting capped off a successful 2012-2013 season for the AFS Ontario Chapter.
Our Next Meeting is Thursday, September 19, 2013
This meeting will be a joint meeting with the CFA. The CFA will have their Annual General Meeting in the afternoon before the dinner meeting. Location: Waterfront Conference Centre.
Our Program Committee has set the dates for the coming 2013-2014 season and will be working hard on developing new technical seminars and providing timely guest speakers. In addition to the September meeting our November 21, 2013 Auction Night and the March 20, 2014 AFS/CFA Scholarship Night will also be held at the Waterfront Conference Centre. Due to its great success we are again planning two seminars to be held at CANMET with a pub night afterwards, so keep October 17, 2013 and February 20, 2014 open. For January 16, 2014 we hope to have a tour(s) of one and possibly two foundries. The AFS Golf Classic is scheduled for June 6, 2014.
This will be the last Ingate until the September issue. Your Board of Directors hope you have a happy and prosperous summer.
We would also like to thank all our Business Card Ad Sponsors for their continued support.
ONTARIO CHAPTER HIGHLIGHTS
Our March 21, 2013 meeting was an outstanding success with over 85 people in attendance, including students, scholarship award recipients, past Chairmen, honorees, and our guest speaker.
Our 50-50 winner for the night was Wade Marquardt.
CELEBRATION OF ACHIEVEMENT
Joe Butler was presented an Award of Recognition for his years of service to the CFA and AFS Ontario Chapter. Joe’s daughter Amanda gave a speech outlining what life was like being the daughter of a Foundry owner and her father’s dedication to the Industry. Joe has been an integral part of the non-ferrous industry and with the help of his brother Roy they carried on their father’s legacy and built a world class facility located in Cambridge.
Enjoy your retirement Joe!
SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
On this evening scholarships were presented to students from Mohawk College, and Reyerson University.

GUEST SPEAKER
The guest speaker of the evening was our current area director of the AFS, Richard Stewart. He achieved his Bachelor of Science Electrical Engineering, University of Missouri at Rolla 1968 and then a Master of Science Electrical Engineering, University of Pittsburgh 1971.
Richards’s entire career has been devoted to manufacture of midsize to large, medium to high tech production machinery. Richard has held various engineering, manufacturing and management positions at Westinghouse Electric, TRW and AEC. In 2005 was honored with the prestigious Nagai-Management Award from Sintokgio in Japan, and Richard is only one of two non-Japanese to ever receive this award. Richard has authored several technical papers and is the holder of several USA patents related to the time he was functioning as a full time technical professional.
Richard will be in Missouri this month for the Cast Expo event.
AWARD OF RECOGNITION
This year the AFS awarded Santosh (Sandy) Dalal for his great service to the casting Industry as a whole. He was born in Calcutta, India and graduated with a B.Sc. with Distinction (1955) from the University of Calcutta. He went on to achieve a B.Sc. in MetaAllurgy (1960) from the University of Wales at Cardiff and his Chartered Engineer (C.Eng ) designation from the U.K.
1) Metallurgist (1960 – 1964) at John Williams of Cardiff Ltd. one of the U.K.’s largest cast iron foundries making ductile, gray and alloy cast iron castings , mostly for automotive and heavy machinery manufacturing industries.
2) Metallurgist (1964 – 1966) at Empire Brass Manufacturing Co. Margate, Kent, England (a subsidiary of Emco – a Canadian Company) making marine loaders and auxiliary loading equipment in various copper-base and aluminum alloy castings.
3) Metallurgical Engineer (1966 – 1968) at Crane Canada Ltd, Montreal, making copper-base alloy castings for plumbing fixtures and industrial valves. The company brought him over from England to its head office in Montreal mainly for trouble-shooting at the company’s many existing foundries in Canada, and in-process development work for the new plant at Brantford, Ont..
4) Plant Metallurgist (1968 – 1970) at Crane Canada’s highly automated new Brantford plant with automatic pouring and high-pressure moulding machines. The pouring, moulding and sand- delivery systems were the most modern in North America at the time. Crane Canada was the first in Canada to use them.
5) Professor ( 1970 – 1996 ), Metallurgy and Materials Engineering Technology program at Mohawk College, Hamilton, Ontario. The foundry and metal casting courses were major components of this new program which started in that year. He had the responsibility to develop and expand the theoretical and practical laboratory contents of the courses as well as ‘metal forming practices’ and ‘non destructive testing’ courses. The foundry related courses were most extensive in Canada than offered by any other institution.
Professional Membership:
1)American Foundry Society ( AFS )
2)American Society for Metals ( ASM International )
3)Institute of British Foundrymen ( IBF )
4) Canadian Inst. of Mining and Metallurgy-Hamilton Chapter ( CIM )
5)Canadian Soc. for Non-Destructive Testing ( CSNDT ) – presently
known as NDE Institute.
FEBRUARY MEETUP
Cast Differently II
Bob Puhakka was back this year for his second installment of the Cast Differently series. The Ontario chapter of the AFS has decided to pursue technical presentations for its members throughout the year and this one did not disappoint. From an intro about Tiberius and his involvement in early aluminum making with Bauxite to an in depth look at modern casting methods, there was something new to be learned by everyone.
Bob and Cast Differently have been working on research involving the cause of casting defects and he has developed a method of eliminating defects and ensuring premium results. The premise is that by having a tortuous path for the melt anywhere within the running system, will cause the oxide layer to become entrained or furled. This creates microscopic defects and stress raisers impacting mechanical properties or ideal heterogenous nucleation points for oxides to open during reduced pressure tests.
He went on to provide tangible proof using examples and case studies of his work. Bob has had great success working with all alloy types including Stainless, Super Duplex, Aluminum and Copper based materials. Dispelling the age old rumors about handling different materials and showing that all Newtonian fluid really just have an aversion to oxygen.
Bob has worked with Foundries locally and around the world solving casting problems. His experience and vast knowledge of the industry has recently led him to become the acting CEO of Custom Aluminum Foundry in Cambridge.
