ONTARIO CHAPTER HIGHLIGHTS
October 20, 2011
This would have to be the highlight meeting of 2011. We were hosted at the McMaster Innovation Park by the CANMet Materials Technology Laboratory. A full afternoon consisting of three technical seminars (at no cost), a tour of the recently opened facilities, and a presentation by Dr. Jennifer Jackman, Director General CANMET materials research laboratory and a casual dinner where industry peers and CANMET personnel mingled together.
A turn out of 56 people took in the early afternoon seminars. These focused on the finishing department. Wheelabrator made a presentation on the State of the Art in Shotblasting and Roberts Sinto presented Finishing Automation and the Barinder Grinding System. This was followed by Trim Press Technology and Automated Finishing presented by Advanced Foundry Solutions.
Following the seminar everyone had a tour the facilities with a brief discussion on the type of work being performed in each area. These consisted of:
- ·Emerging Metals Group
- ·Electron Microscopy Lab
- ·Mechanical Testing Lab
- ·Metal Casting Lab
- ·Metal Forming Lab
- ·NDT Certification Group
- ·Corrosion Suite.
Following the tour Dr. Jennifer Jackman gave a presentation of CANMETs history, capabilities and partnerships. With facilities in Hamilton and Calgary, it is the largest research centre in Canada dedicated to metals and materials fabrication, processing and evaluation.
Hamilton and southwestern Ontario are at the centre of the Canadian manufacturing sector, serving as home to many important industries and research organizations. With their move from Ottawa CANMET-MTL is now in a highly
strategic region with easy access to approximately ten times more prospective users. CANMET-MTL will continue to be involved in programs, such as the Vehicle Structural Materials Research Program; the Pipelines Research Program; the Emerging Materials Research Program; the Resource for the Innovation of Engineered Materials; and the Materials for Nuclear and Conventional Energy Research Program.

This is a four way partnership with Government, Universities, NRCan/CANMET-MTL and Industry. The government sets policy, regulations and provides funding. Universities provide discovery, knowledge and highly educated people.
NRCan/CANMET- MTL provides the scientific knowledge and facilities and autonomy, while Industry provides innovation.

AFS Ontario would like to thank Dr. Jackman for opening the facilities for our members. We would also like to thank Dr.s Mac Braid, Wojcieck Kasprzak, Pete Newcombe and all the other members of CANMET-MTL who gave of their time and knowledge.

Why AFS Ontario has Gone GREEN
As was mentioned in our last Ingate we have gone Green. There are a number of reasons for this. One of course is to help the environment (less paper, less fuel for snail mail etc.). Hopefully it will also allow us to get it to you in a timely manner. Also it will allow people from other chapters and for that matter anyone who logs onto our web site see what we are doing. And of course it also includes the cost factor. Printing and mailing costs are ever increasing. Mailing leads to another problem; we have had a significant number of mailed Ingates returned due to errors in the mailing address. Remember the Ingate is in PDF Spela vara online for riktiga pengar, och valj bland nagra av de popularaste spelen: Marvel Valj bland superstora jackpottar med vara med Marvel-tema, t. format so those that wish to have a hard copy may do so. We would like to hear your comments. Send them to skopysh@cogeco.ca.
Note: As long as we have your correct email address you should get your copy of the Ingate. If you or if anyone you know who is a paid up member of the Ontario Chapter did not receive the September issue please contact us at afsontario@bell.net.
MARK YOUR CALENDER Auction Night
Thursday November 24 is our Fun n Games Night. This will include our silent auction, live auction and some fun games with interesting prizes. Remember the proceeds go towards the scholarships we will be giving out at our Scholarship Night in March 2012.
