Topic: Employment Contracts – Reap the Rewards
Learn about the benefits of employment contracts.
Long gone are the days when a simple handshake or a ‘job offer letter’ will ensure the smooth hiring of a new employee. And long gone are the days when an employee stays with you for many years.
So… as a business owner or manager, do you want the peace of mind that comes from:
- Understanding why every employee in your organization should have an Employment Contract, not just a letter?
- Appreciating why the timing of when a job offer is “made” and when it is “signed” can mean the difference between security and risk exposure?
- Knowing the potential impact on your organization of ‘reasonable notice’? – The game changer in employment law.
Things have changed. Could it be time for you to re-visit your hiring (and termination) process?
Technical Seminar: Due to a conflict in timing the seminar on Tooling has been postponed to a later date. Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.
Ticket Prices and Reservations:
It is always difficult to plan the correct number of meals for our dinner meetings since many don’t reserve ahead. This often results in the Chapter paying for more meals than necessary. As a result we have decided to leave the dinner price at $40.00 when reserved but will charge $45.00 at the door. So please remember to reserve ahead.
We ask all members and guests for your assistance in placing your reservations no later than 5:00 pm on Monday October 15th
Dinner tickets are $40.00 if pre- registered; $45.00 at the door. Retiree tickets are $25.00 and students are $10.00. Register at afsontario@bell.net. Please include the names of the people attending.

SEPTEMBER 20, 2012 HIGHLIGHTS
Brad Bowman from Mohawk College gave two short presentations that were of interest to our attendees.
Integration of Mohawk Laboratory
The first concerned the integration of the Mohawk Foundry laboratory facilities with the Canmet foundry laboratory. Equipment from Mohawk College that was an upgrade to the Canmet facility equipment has been moved to the Canmet facility. This included such items as Sand testing equipment and roller lines.
Redundant equipment at the Mohawk Lab will be put up for sale with the proceeds going towards student scholarships.
Pictures of the equipment that will be put up for sale were shown and they will be posted on the AFS Ontario website along with bidding information for the equipment. It is hoped this will be procedure will be completed in October of this year.
Additive Manufacturing
The second presentation was about the establishment of an Additive Manufacturing Facility at Mohawk College. The College along with some industry supporters are putting forward a proposal for government funding to support this initiative. This technology which is based upon 3D printing technology utilizing metal powders and laser sintering can produce complex parts without the design restrictions of machined or even some cast parts. A short video showing technology from a company called EOS was shown. This video can be viewed on their website. Companies were urged to participate in the project and if interested should contact Tony Thoma at Mohawk College. Tony is the Dean of Engineering Technology and can be reached at tony.thoma@mohawkcollege.ca.
Foundry Education Survey
A recent survey was conducted by Dan Peace of Dominion Pattern works and Eric Porter from Lakeshore Sand. The purpose was to see what foundry education activities were available across Canada. It was conducted by contacting foundries and doing a web search.
The results show the following:
British Columbia – the BC Institute of Technology conducts foundry tours and offers Foundry Introduction as a part of their Mechanical Engineering course.
AFS-BC offers scholarships to BCIT students. AFSBC also conducts an annual half day safety seminar.
Alberta – the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, in Calgary, has a small foundry as part of their facilities, but has no demand from industry to develop it.
The Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, in Edmonton, has no facilities but teaches foundry theory as a part of their manufacturing process curriculum.
Saskatchewan and Manitoba – have no known Provincial resources but foundries contacted in Manitoba participate in programs offered through the AFS in Chicago.
Ontario – the Mohawk College McCoy Foundry Laboratory, in Hamilton, is being integrated into the new Canmet facilities. Mechanical Engineering students can take foundry related courses at Canmet. Mohawk also offers a number of foundry course through its distance education series as well as contract learning.
Ryerson University, in Toronto, offers post graduate studies in magnesium and aluminum alloys as well as one full class for all MA and PhD engineering grads.
The University of Windsor offers post graduate foundry courses.
The AFSOntario chapter offers two technical seminars per year.
Canmet NDE and Casting Research offers contract services, including funding source support.
Quebec – Le Cegep de Trois Rivieres operates the Quebec Metallurgical Centre, offering R&D services and foundry related training.
Maritimes and NL – no know provincial resources
AFS Chicago – CMI courses organized throughout the USA and Canada where requested by chapters and regions. Distance Learning and one time Webinars are available thought the internet. E-Connections promotes AFS educational offerings Along with Modern Casting’s articles.
This by no means is meant to be a definitive survey of the educational system. More work needs to be done. If anyone has more information please contact Dan Peace at dominion@dominionpattern.ca or Eric Porter at eric.porter@fmsand.com.
CFA
Dave Seyler introduced the new president of the CFA, Peter Clark. Peter is looking forward to working with the synergies between the CFA and the AFS with policies and governmental affairs on their part and technical issues on the part of the AFS. Alberta Institute of Technology.
MOHAWK COLLEGE
As Mohawk realigns their foundry lab facilities in conjunction with Canmet a sale of some of their equipment is being offered. Check out the Marketplace and contact Tony Thoma at tony.thoma@mohawkcollege.ca. Some of the equipment is shown below. For more photos go to The marketplace tab.
